"What other City's don't have The Sun Trolley"
Ft. Lauderdale, FL - June 2006 - For the last two months (April - May 2006) the City of Ft. Lauderdale has received delivery after delivery of their brand new trolleys. With a total of 14 Classic American Trolleys, their transportation fleet of trolleys named "The Sun Trolley" is now complete. The City has chosen Limos of South Florida, owned by Mark Levitt, to be the fleet operator. Levitt worked closely with Specialty Vehicles in Henderson, NV to secure the purchase of Supreme built Classic American Trolleys. These trolleys were chosen because the price was right, the dealer gave great service and Levitt has worked well with Specialty Vehicles in the past.
Each trolley seats 30 passengers and is ADA handicap accessible. These trolleys are equipped with removable side walls to give the passengers that nostalgic look and feel of a traditional San Francisco cable car trolley. Because of the temperature and humidity in southern Florida, the City plans to use the removable side walls during the winter months when the weather is not as intense and more permissible.
Currently, riders can take advantage of riding the trolleys for free. Toward the end of June, however, there will be a fare instituted of $.25 or $.50 per ride. When the trolleys were ordered, each vehicle was outfitted with a fare box.
At this time, there are five existing routes the trolleys take around the city. That number will grow to seven when all of the trolleys are put in service. The trolleys also participate in a park and ride, and on weekends one of the trolleys takes riders to and from the Tri-Rail Seater Train. Sometime in June there will also be a route constituted called the "Convention Connection" and a "Beach Route."
"By offering the trolley ride, it gives tourists something unique. All over the country other cities don't have anything like this. Our tourist will remember that they rode the trolley in Ft. Lauderdale!" explained Levitt, who also said the rider response to the trolleys has been phenomenal. They are impressed with the vehicles because they look good, have a nostalgic appearance and are more fun to ride than a shuttle type bus. The trolleys have been equipped with two doors, one located in the front and one in the rear, so loading and unloading is much faster, which cuts down on travel time from place to place.
